However, a squirrel’s life span is usually two years longer than a rat’s, and even more, depending on the squirrel species. When you compare the lifespan of two wild rodents, you might think that squirrels and rats are similar because they face identical predators and environments and are roughly the same size. Some species of squirrels, like the chipmunk, can live up to 15 years in captivity.
